Converting the roof of a 1,000 square meter building to Urban Farming of hydroponic tomatoes can potentially yield 43,000 kilograms per year. If each family uses 1 kilogram of tomatoes every 3 days, in a 365 days or 1 year, each family will only consume 120 kilograms. Thus, the yearly harvest can provide tomatoes for 350 families. If the building has 10, 100 square meter condos per floor, the yield can provide for 35 floors.
Thus, instead of selling tomatoes at wholesale prices for sale in supermarkets, the urban farmer can sell the produce direct to tenants at similar but reduced prices. The farmer tend to earn more and the residents can even pick their pesticide free tomatoes right from the vine, at reduced prices to boot. Thus, Urban Farming can be the future of fresh produce since virtually any plant can be raised hydroponically. Farms can trade produce with other urban farms to provide a significant portion of the produce requirements of the city.
